I wish I could say that I was so astute that I planned this mini-session location for my “urban” Christmas card look because this precise spot would be so perfect for holiday photos, but I just lucked out really and got really excited when I saw the red and green match up.
So if anyone wants to purchase this photo to put on their Christmas card and pass these legs off as your own, you have my blessing. Just kidding, just kidding.
Here’s a glance at this morning’s session.

This is my aunt and uncle. They’ve been married for 25 years and going strong! It’s been a while — a long while — since I’ve gotten to officially photograph family members so this night was a lot of fun and even more so when I got to go to dinner with them, stay up late talking, and sleep over.
Growing up theirs is a marriage I’ve always looked up to and wanted to emulate. They are always, always laughing — at life, at themselves, at everything — and you can tell it gets them through the stress of life together rather than letting it pull them apart. They are wise, thoughtful, patient, and comforting, with each other and with everyone else. You can tell they still really adore each other just by the way they look at each other and talk about each other, and it’s so nice to be around.
I’ll never forget a couple years ago at Thanksgiving, surrounded by relatives and on opposite ends of a long dining table, my uncle said to his gorgeous wife how much he appreciated her, and with a smile in his eye said, “You know, we’ve got a good thing here.” I think everyone melted a little because it’s so true.
They had photos taken of the family as well, but I had to highlight them as a couple first! Congratulations, you two lovebirds!

I have said it every time I’ve even mentioned this session, but I had so. much. fun with this couple. You can really tell how much fun these two have together. They were cracking up the entire session and were cracking me up. I literally kept laughing as I was going through their proofs remembering some of the funny things that were said and just how much fun they were, which my husband can attest to.
I think it all started when I had just barely started shooting them and David said to me, “Umm, Shannon? Do my feet look weird?” And I said, “You mean because you’re not wearing any socks? No, it looks fine.” And he responded, laughing, but clearly a little defensively, “I am wearing socks! See?” and reaches into his shoe to dig up this tiny 2cm corner of a sock from inside his shoe. I think that set the tone for the whole session when the three of us just burst out laughing.
Then trying to get them to balance on this beam was hilarious, perhaps more for me than them I guess, but they were such good sports. I loved spending time with them. One of my other favorite moments was when I had them laying in this field in grass up to their waists and as I was quietly photographing them, David casually said, “Yep, just a typical Wednesday afternoon. This is what we always do when we get off work, go lay down in an empty field.” Oh man, so many funny memories. And who knows what they were constantly laughing about when I was too far away to hear. I don’t even care if it was somehow at my expense because it produced such awesome, genuine photos of this couple.
Go all the way to the bottom of the post to check out something a little different!

One of my favorite shots of the day:

And another extra little treat for you (may take a bit to load since it’s a pretty big file):

Wow, so I definitely got a little carried away editing their photos, but I couldn’t help it! Look at them! I was saving up this location for the perfect session, and I’m so glad I did because it was perfect for them. I loved this couple, and I knew it was going to be a great session when right at the beginning Melissa totally went for it and cuddled and hugged and kissed her fiance without me having to orchestrate it all. I loved it! She’s so full of life! My absolute favorite shots of the day were her being her, like when she kissed Will’s nose. I’m so glad I caught that! And there are so many more in their full gallery. I can’t wait for them to see them all!
Also, just a funny side note, I like to think that I notice a lot of little things while I’m shooting, but there are always things that manage to escape my notice until I’m going through the shots later. This time, however, I was surprised to realize when I was proofing that I almost wore the exact same shirt as Melissa did in a different color that morning! Does this shirt look familiar? Haha!
Congratulations, Melissa and Will! Can’t wait to see you again for your bridals!

I’m working on this session right now, but I couldn’t resist posting this image. Ahhh…gorgeousness.

As we walked through an empty town through an almost empty parking lot to the back of a building, Aubrey said to me, “Umm, Shannon? Where are we going?” Then we turned a corner, and I said, “Here.” Her reply: “Ooooh!” Thanks for trusting me! And thanks for waking up at the crack of dawn for me. I love the mood of all these photos, love the light, love the colors, love the people. Just love ‘em.
