If you’re in the area, you should check out Bonfet!, a local art and music studio! I had so much fun dropping in for this birthday party to do some studio photos for them. The kids were having so much fun painting (and the parents were having fun relaxing). They really did such a great job. It was fun seeing the kids’ creativity and their personal touches. Bonfet! also offers all kinds of other party options and private lessons. Check out their site or like their Facebook page to keep up on class schedules.

Typically I don’t post this many photos from a single session (for time and brevity’s sake), but I just couldn’t restrain myself this time. Everything about this session was incredible — the people, the mood, the locations, the people, the people, the people. I love them. And I absolutely love these images of them because they are so them. Since the first email I received from them I was dying to meet them and photograph them, and they were just as awesome as they sounded.
We were doing some three generational photos, and this was one of the first shots of the day. As you can tell, we had a lot of fun from the very beginning. You gotta love when your clients are so naturally natural.

This couple is amazing. They were fun and affectionate and romantic, and I felt like I was shooting for an engagement. Young love is beautiful and exciting, but photographing such a happy couple after they’ve raised their kids and been together for decades adds so much more to the romance.

I asked them to walk to the bottom of the ramp, and completely unprovoked they started dancing together. Swoon. I love these shots.

The reason the family was all together for this occasion was to celebrate the 50 years this couple has been married. Their son scheduled the session with me, and I loved his descriptions of his family members in his emails to me. After I read this line from his email, I knew I’d be asking them to make their own music to dance to: “Now-days, they’re master-gardeners and I can still see some of the old magic between them when they dance, assuming the band is to their liking.” How perfect that they’re dancing in their very own garden as well!

I LOVE this family shot. I think one of my favorite things about it is that no one is looking at me at all. It’s like I’m not even there.

Elaborately posed newborn photos have a time and place, and they can be really beautiful. But they’re almost never my favorite photos, and they’re definitely not my personal style. I love the true lifestyle photos — the breastfeeding, the cuddling, the kissing, the entire family interacting. And I absolutely love these photos because of the emotions and personality that you can see in them.
Such a sweet, warm, welcoming family. Love them.

Bottom left: probably my favorite shot of the day. Normally I don’t shoot while we’re trying to soothe the babies, but I’m so glad I snapped this one. Gorgeous.

Another one of my faves below.

Oh wow, I’m so attached to this little cutie (and his parents are pretty awesome too). We totally bonded, and by the end, he was grabbing my hand to walk me out of the field we were shooting in and crying that I had to go. It doesn’t get any sweeter than that!
Not that it didn’t take him a few minutes to warm up to me. When we first started talking, he took off like a shot to his bedroom. I, of course, followed — camera in hand — and found him sitting right in the center of his circle rug. Adorable! I have to admit, some of my favorite photos are pouting kid shots. That’s kids for you: a whole spectrum of emotion in a matter of minutes.

Check out those gorgeous lashes!

I told him I have matching shoes…and I wasn’t lying. I have a pair of these in black. Yes, I own velcro shoes. Maybe that’s why I love working with kids so much. We wear the same clothes.

The Caddy wasn’t quite in the plans, but when he jumped in and almost reversed into me (thanks to his dad for the warning), I couldn’t stop laughing that he was driving his own little car around the yard. How awesome is that?! And I just love how happy he was. Boys and their cars.

Perhaps my favorite shot of the day:

Such a sweet fam, and I love these close-up cuddly shots of them. I’m so glad we got photos taken for them before they had to move (seriously, how are all my clients mid-move right now?!).
The story of how they found me cracked me up because the husband and wife were separately and simultaneously referred to a photographer by two totally different people who had recently had family photos taken. When they compared notes on who the photographer was they were each referred to, they realized they were both talking about me! Awww, I felt so special.
Also, this was probably the most easy-going baby I’ve ever worked with in my life. He was totally chill the entire time. Unreal.
